Types of Ringtones

Ringtones are broadly classified into two categories : monophonic ringtone and polyphonic ringtones.

Monophonic Ringtones
These are simple tunes, compatible with almost all of the today's cell phones. Monophonic ringtones compatile cell phones can only make a single tone at a time.
The monophonic ringtone tune is comprised of a series of sequential tones at different frequencies.

Polyphonic Ringtones
Only polyphonic ringotnes compatible mobile phones can play polyphonic ringtones. Such phones have the capability of playing upto 16 separate tones at once. Combination of these seperate tones produce very harmonic melody and soothing music. Polyphonic ringtones are more musical than a monophonic ringtones.

It is likely that future cell phones will be capable of producing musical ringtones of CD quality.
